Generation Dysfunctional

By Chris Freind Generation Dysfunctional

Each generation thinks it’s better than the present one. It’s a natural tendency, looking with nostalgia at the past through rose-colored glasses while conveniently forgetting the negatives, and a self-centeredness based on the belief that it “did things right.”

As we all know, the claims of “old-timers” of “when I was your age, I walked five miles to school through 2 feet of snow” are wildly exaggerated. And many aspects of today’s society, which many older folks see as “things going to hell in a hand-basket,” are, in fact, remarkable accomplishments.

But while technological breakthroughs have made incredible improvements in our day-to-day lives — achievements unthinkable just 20 years ago — that has come with a price. Modern conveniences that require no effort have, in large part, killed personal initiative and work ethic. Coupled with insane helicopter parents who literally hover over and mastermind every move of their children, a generation of wholly dysfunctional individuals is coming of age.

They have grown up in a protective bubble, completely insulated from everything that isn’t orchestrated down to a tee. But as they step into the real world — be it school, the athletic field, or job market, they are woefully ill-equipped to deal with the slightest adversity, let alone a bona fide crisis.

So the only “solution” they know is to remain defiantly entitled, demanding anything not to their liking be changed, canceled, and banned — or else.

For perhaps the first time in American history, it is becoming painfully apparent that things were indeed better in the past, as the country’s march toward self–destruction continues.

Consider just a few examples that never would have occurred just a few generations ago:

• Students in a high school class were given different roles to recreate the atmosphere of slavery in America: Slaves, prohibitionists, slave traders, politicians. But the exercise, which would have brought tedious textbook lessons to life, was abruptly cut short because several students broke down crying, storming out of the room because they felt “bad” for “offending” the black students in the class. So now, we can’t even teach history to college-bound young adults for fear of rattling their ultra-acute sensitivities. And if you can’t teach history accurately, the truth soon becomes forgotten, and we all suffer.

• In what has become a commonplace occurrence, especially on the soccer field, players routinely fall to the ground after minimal or no contact. The invariable result? All players take a knee while coaches, refs, and especially parents, all charge the field to render comfort to the fallen “warrior.” After a ridiculous amount of drama, the player rises, and, after receiving the obligatory applause, more often than not stays in the game, all smiles, and is running full speed five seconds later, his ego all better, and hurt feelings soothed.

That’s not to pick on those who sustain true injury, but in the vast majority of cases, the “wimpification” of America is on full display, as this coddled generation shows how much it needs — in fact, craves — such attention. Not that long ago, young athletes played with the small hurts, and would have been embarrassed to make such a scene — and would disown any parent who came onto the field. Short of physically being unable to continue, their pride would push them to keep playing (and we’re obviously not talking about serious injury, such as concussions). But in our “it’s-all about me” society of no shame, today’s kids revel in the misplaced accolades they receive. And it’s getting exponentially worse.

• School Halloween celebrations are increasingly being cancelled because a small minority of students and parents feel “uncomfortable” and offended by the traditions of that holiday. It’s not enough that they simply don’t participate (and who are we kidding? Halloween hasn’t been a “religious” holiday for at least a century), because that would be live-and-let-live. No, they have to push their grievances on everyone, bullying all who disagree, and demanding longstanding American cultural traditions be summarily dismantled. And in the ultimate act of cowardly appeasement, more and more administrators are capitulating rather than fighting, fueling the “offended” movement to push their agenda that much further next time. Prior generations would never have rolled over like that.

What the hell is happening? Why, despite Middle America recoiling at this level of craziness, is nothing being done to stop it? And where are the parents and leaders, calling out the loudmouths propagating such madness?

The answers are that A) some are afraid of being labeled insensitive, offensive and bigoted, so they keep quiet, waiting for someone else to do the heavy lifting; and B) many more are part of the problem, even those who may publicly rail against such things.

And we are reaping what we have sown, as it has become ingrained in tomorrow’s leaders to be politically correct, massively entitled, immensely coddled, ultrasensitive, and incredibly narcissistic.

The recent actions of our political leaders show exactly where our children get their attitudes.

In just the last few weeks, the Haverford Republicans, breaking more than a quarter-century campaign tradition, refused to debate at a League of Women Voters forum. Same for the Chester GOP, whose candidates for mayor and city council bailed at the opportunity to discuss the issues with their Democratic counterparts. And the Democratic candidates for Delaware County Council, at the last minute, completely blew off a scheduled League of Women Voters forum, forcing the event to be cancelled. Talk about narcissistic! And so much for setting a good example, keeping your word, and honoring civic duty as candidates.

On the national level, the two Republican frontrunners, Donald Trump and Ben Carson, refused to participate in a debate that was scheduled for three hours, stating that two was their absolute limit. Really? Regardless of whether that time frame was too long for maintaining the attention of viewers, no candidate running for the most powerful position in the world should be so wimpy that he could not endure an extra 60 minutes for the American people’s benefit — so adeptly pointed out by Carly Fiorina.

Voters want character and heart in their leader, since they know the president’s stamina must be unrivaled. So what does it say that the top two Republicans not only espoused weakness, but perhaps more important, demonstrated an entitlement attitude that if they didn’t get exactly what they wanted, they would “run away” and not participate. That used to be called selfishness and being a brat, which we taught our children not to be.

When our leaders don’t practice what they preach, it makes instilling the bedrock values that made America the greatest nation in history virtually impossible. And if that doesn’t change, we will lose yet another generation.

John Hughes, the prescient 1980’s film director, got it so right in his more-relevant–than-ever movie “The Breakfast Club,” as teacher Richard Vernon talks with the janitor Carl about the future:

Vernon: “You think about this: When you get old, when I get old, these kids are going to be running the country.”

Carl: “Yeah.”

Vernon: “Now this is the thought that wakes me up in the middle of the night. That when I get older, these kids are going to take care of me.”

Carl: “I wouldn’t count on it.”

Neither would I.

HB 874 Union Bully Bill Now Law

HB 874 is now law becoming Act 59 with Gov. Tom Wolf’s signature yesterday, Nov. 4. HB 874 Union Bully Bill Now Law

The bill bans otherwise illegal acts done in the name of labor disputes  which sensible people in the Pennsylvania Legislature have been trying to do since 2013.

These acts specifically include stalking, harassment and threats to use weapons of mass destruction.

The first attempt died after being gutted in the Republican-controlled state Senate by union-connected Republicans.

Well, the Senate got a change of leadership this year and the bill was reintroduced as HB 874. It passed the House overwhelmingly on April 21 with all Democrats excepting Greg Vitali of the 166th District voting against it.

The state Senate passed it Oct. 20 on a 30-18 vote, again with the Democrats being united in opposition.

The House concurred with the changes the Senate made on Oct 27 — again with all Ds but Vitali being in opposition — and sent it to the Governor who has now made this should-have-been-a no-brainer discussion  law.

The law does not ban traditional and accepted union acts like picketing (and giant inflatable rats) it should be noted.

Election Results 2015

The people of Pennsylvania have elected the brother of a notorious union boss to the top court along with two other Democrats. Election Results 2015

As of 11:08 p.m., Nov. 3, with 77. 7 percent of the vote counted Kevin Dougherty, the brother of John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty,  was the top votegetter with 956,119 followed by David Wecht with 951,658 votes and Christine Donohue with 936,016 votes.

Three seats were up for election.

The Republican tallies were Judith Olson, 762,113; Michael George, 683,043 and Anne Covey, 680,607.

Independent Paul Panepinto had 126,976 votes.

The ideologue Democrats will have a 5-2 majority on the bench. Terms are for 10 years.

The Democrat ticket overwhelmed the Republicans in Philly. Their tallies in the city as of this writing were Dougherty, 198,410; Donohue, 161,267 and Wecht, 158,392 verses the Republican totals of Olson, 27,454; Clovey, 19,423; George, 19,343.

Also winning were Democrats Alice Dubow who beat Emil Giordano for Superior Court judge and Micahel Wojcik who beat Paul Lalley for Commonwealth Court judge.

Closer to home the news was better.  Republicans Dominic Pileggi, Anthony Scanlon and Margaret Amoroso easily won election to Delaware County Common Pleas Court over Larry Abel and G. Lawrence Demarco. Scanlon was on both ballots.

And just as easily, Colleen P. Morrone, John P. McBlain and Michael Culp all won re-election to Delaware County Council over Richard R. Womack, Christine A. Reuther and Sharon J. Booker.

Jack Whelan was not opposed for re-election as District Attorney.

Lisa Esler, who ran a write-in campaign last summer for the vacant 161st District seat was easily re-elected to her Penn Delco School Board.

And Joe Gale, who tweaked party bosses for an unexpected Republican Primary win last May, appears to have repeated the trick winning the minority county commissioner seat.  Montgomery County guarantees one seat on the board to the minority party. Democrats Josh Shapiro and Val Arkoosh easily won control of the board getting 96,838 and 88,608 votes respectively. Gale finished third with 65,428 votes while party-endorsed Steve Tolbert Jr. had 62,326.

Sen. Scott Wagner (R-28) reported on Facebook that Guy Reschenthaler flipped a vacant seat in the 37th Senate District. This would increase GOP control of the body to 31-19.

Let it be noted that with Pileggi’s victory in his judicial race a special election looms to fill his 9th District state senate seat.

And congrats to Lenore Bruno who won a squeaker in her 4th Ward Plymouth Council race.

Harpe’s Head is a crossroads in Webster County, Ky. It is named for Micajah Harpe or his head anyway. “Big” Harpe was a serial killer highway man and river priate who met his demise at that particular spot in 1799. The husband of one of his victims decapitated the villain and stuck his head in a tree. It remained there for 10 years before someone stole it.

Election Day 2015

Tomorrow, Nov. 3, is Election Day 2015 and after much soul searching I am just going to hit the button for straight Republican. Election Day 2015

A few weeks back I basically endorsed Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Paul Panepinto, who is running as an independent for state Supreme Court.

Paul is a good man and I don’t regret a word I wrote but the Democrat ticket consists of three people who I strongly suspect are cut from the same cloth as disgraced Attorney General Kathleen Kane and one of whom is actually the brother of this guy.

While I still have my doubts about Republican Anne Covey they are just not worth making me take a chance and help cause what I am convinced would be a markedly corrupt Democrat takeover.

And it should be noted that Republicans Judith Olson and Michael George seem to be very good.

The other race of import is the Montgomery County Commissioner battle in which the party bosses are trying to do everything they can to keep Joe Gale from taking office because Joe beat one of the party’s endorsed candidates — a Planned Parenthood-supporting, well-connected businessman  — in the primary.

Party leaders are spreading a bizarre tale that Joe asked to be kept off the sample ballot. Right. He wins the Republican primary and doesn’t want to be on the sample ballot. Only a leader who thinks his followers are fools would dream of making such a laughable claim.

If you are a Montgomery County voter and are given a sample ballot with the complete Republican slate, hit the party button. If, however, the sample ballot omits Joe’s name, hit the party button so you make sure you get all the judges, then uncheck the name of Steve Tolbert — the other Republican commissioner candidate — while leaving Joe’s name active.

One minority party member is guaranteed a spot on the county’s three-person Board of Commissioners. Montco GOP Chairman Mike Vereb is apparently not trying to win but merely get his apparatchik as the minority member.

He should hang his head in disgrace for that and for endangering the judicial race.

UPDATE:  OK, I will confess and come clean. I ended up voting for Panepinto in lieu of Covey. I just like the guy.

Turnout was fairly high for an off-year election  in my Springfield polling place and tilted to the GOP even more than usual.

I worked the polls this morning for Montco Commissioner candidate Joe Gale at the Plymouth Fire House.  Joe was on the Republican sample ballot and the morning Republican poll workers were nice and as supportive of him  as they were of Steve Tolbert Jr., who was the party-endorsed candidate that won in the primary.

Turnout was very heavy at the polling place for an off year election, I was told , and evenly split between the parties. Plymouth has been trending Democrat, the GOP people said.

The precinct is the site of a hot town council race as unions are spending heavily to unseat incumbent Lenore Bruno who has been opposing regulations that would restrict township work to firms using union labor. If these regulations were imposed  the average resident would feel an unnecessary tax bite.

Good luck Lenore.

Wolf Delco Rally Dem Fiasco As Budget Becomes Issue

Wolf Delco Rally Dem Fiasco As Budget Becomes IssueGov. Tom Wolf this Halloween afternoon came to Media, Pa. to try to get a Philly union boss’ brother elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court but was instead met with a crowd demanding he  “sign the budget” and “give us books.”

The Democrat rally held on Veterans Square was probably more than half Wolf opponents. At least 100 persons attended.

One protester from Saint Dorthy’s School in Drexel Hill noted that the children have no textbooks and teachers are mimeographing lessons.

Penn Delco School Director Lisa Esler expressed anger and disgust with the governor’s political actions.

“I don’t think it’s fair  or even ethical for state law to require a school district to pass a budget on time, collect our money and then hold the money hostage,” she said.

That’s what your ego has wrought Governor.

The state legislature passed $30.179 billion budget on June 30 that was a 3.6 percent increase over the previous year and would have increased education spending by $100 million.

Wolf Delco Rally Dem Fiasco As Budget Becomes Issue
Little children plead for Gov. Tom Wolf to set his ego aside and get them school books.

Wolf vetoed it.

He also rejected a recent proposal to increase education spending by $400 million if he agrees to liquor privatization and pension reform.

He also has refused to use line-item veto power to make changes that he doesn’t want and, most tellingly, arrogantly refused to sign temporary spending measures.

Wherever one stands on the political spectrum one must be ashamed of this governor and his ego-driven agenda.

Attending the rally with Wolf and those seeking local office were the Dem Supreme Court ticket and U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr. significantly adding to the embarrassment.

It should be noted that Wolf was the only speaker that got significant grief from the crowd.
