The richest Philadelphian in history was Stephen Girard, a banker who lived from 1750 to 1831.

The Independent of Britain estimates his worth at $105 billion in today’s dollars and calls him the 17th richest man who ever lived.
 
Number one is Mansa Musa I, the 14th century ruler of Mali who made his fortune with gold and salt and whose worth is estimated at $400 billion.
 
Fourteen of the 26 on the list are American, with the richest being John D. Rockefeller at number 3 with $340 billion. Bill Gates at his peak was worth $136 billion.
 
Besides Gates, the others on the list still alive are Carlos Slim at 22 worth $68 billion and Warren Buffet at 26 worth $64 billion.

William the Conqueror is number seven and is said to have been worth $229.5 billion while his fighting companion Alan Rufus at number 11 was wroth $178.65 billion
