Yes, “Moritz”, in German. He was Egyptian, but in the imagery of the Middle Ages, anyone from Egypt was often depicted as a Negro, that is, a sub-Saharan black. They depicted the Moors the same way.
Germany’s patron saint is actually St. Michael the Archangel, though St. Joseph was also counted as a patron. And in Bavaria, as here in the US, the Blessed Mother is also counted as a patron saint.
The town that stands where St. Maurice was martyred with his men in what is today Switzerland, is called St. Maurice, not to be confused with San Moritz, which at the other end of the little country.
