So why do we call the pants jeans and denims? Credit the French. Weavers in Genoa, Italy back in the 1600s developed an inexpensive but tough blue fabric that became popular in France. The French name for Genoa was Genes and hence comes jeans. Then weavers in Nimes, France created their own version. This fabric was said to come from “de Nimes” (from Nimes) and hence comes denims.
