Daphne Goggins To Be Rejected By Philly GOP?

The Philadelphia Republican Party, Feb. 13, endorsed North Philadelphia ward leader Daphne Goggins for mayor.

Not that it should matter, but Daphne is a black woman. She would be the first black woman to run for the city’s mayor with a major party endorsement.

Actually, she would be the first black woman endorsed by the city GOP for the office. Actually, she would be the first black endorsed by the city GOP for mayor, at least to our recollection.

Anyway, in a bizarre ham-handed move the Philly Republican boss Michael Meehan summoned ward leaders to reconsider. The vote to reconsider is scheduled for tonight, Feb. 18.

It would be the first time that the party reconsidered an endorsement vote.

The excuse is that Daphne is collecting federal disability payments. Not illegally or unfairly getting the money — there doesn’t seem any debate that she has fibromyalgia — but that she’s getting it.

Slick move Meehan. We think you want to lose. Really.

Why else would you discourage the blacks — many of whom think just like conservative whites — from participation?

It’s exactly like how suburban and rural Republican leaders try to drive out conservatives.

Just sayin’ but the city GOP leaders seem to do pretty good for themselves by finishing second.

  1. Why would Meehan do this? If Daphne is qualified and able, stop the reconsideration vote. That’s terrible. She should be endorsed unanimously. Is Meehan a RINO?
