Voter ID To Get Trial Run Today

Administration officials are reminding voters who are coming to the polls for the primary election, today, April 24, that they will be asked to present photo ID as the Department of State embarks on a “soft rollout” of the state’s new voter ID law, says State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129). 

While ID will not be required for tomorrow it will be necessary in the November general election. People who arrive at the polls in November without valid ID will have the opportunity to vote by provisional ballot and present identification within six days to the appropriate county board of elections. 

Act 18 of 2012 requires registered voters to present valid photo identification every time they appear to vote and also requires those using absentee ballots to submit proof of identification. Valid forms of identification must include a name, photo and expiration date, except when an individual presents a military identification card. A driver’s license or identification card issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), military identification cards, cards issued by an accredited Pennsylvania higher education institution and licensed long-term care facility will all be accepted.

Those who have been following this blog or politics in general will know that today, April 24, is the Pennsylvania primary election.

The Democrat ticket features a challenge to incumbent U.S. Senator Bob Casey from blue-collar business owner Joseph Vodvarka of Allegheny County. Send a message Democrats. Show you are not sheep. Vote for the little guy.
It also incudes a battle for state Attorney General between Kathleen Kane of Lackawanna County and former 8th District Congressman Patrick Murphy, who our columnist Chris Freind really doesn’t like. The winner faces Republican David Freed of Cumberland County who is unopposed.
On the Republican ticket there is of course the presidential contest with  Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich still trying to take down Mitt Romney, and with Rick Santorum still on the ballot serving as a useful “none of the above”.
The most important presidential vote, though, may be those for the congressional district delegates (see list at the bottom). Of the 72 delegates Pennsylvania will send to the Presidential election 59 will be directly elected from the states 18 congressional districts.   
The U.S. Senate contest features David Christian of Bucks County, Marc Scaringi of Cumberland County, Sam Rohrer of Berks County, Tom Smith of Armstrong County and Steve Welch of Chester County. Welch, who is a former donor to liberal Democrat Congressman Joe Sestak, and who voted for Barack Obama, is the man the state Republican leaders strangely decided to endorse. He has also been endorsed by the Philadelphia Inquirer. If you are a Republican who believes President Obama has been good for this country, you should probably vote for Welch. I’m voting for Rohrer.
For those in the 9th State Senatorial District, incumbent Dominic Pileggi, who is that body’s majority leader, is trying to fend off a challenge from citizen Rogers Howard who is angry about drunken spending and cronyism in Harrisburg. For those living in the 9th District looking to send a loud message, well, here is your chance.
Frank Pinto of Dauphin County and John Maher of Allegheny County are seeking the nomination for state Auditor General. The winer will face Eugene DePasquale of York County who is running unopposed on the Democrat ticket.
Here is a list of  congressional district delegates posted by JediJones on FreeRepublic.Com in which he has endeavored to place the delegate with his preferred candidate. If the candidate’s name is on the party ballot you can be confident that that candidate is for Romney.

Well, primary election day is almost here, and some of the races have gotten downright nasty. From disingenuous, mean-spirited campaign ads to a Democrat masquerading as a Republican accusing his opponent of being a Democrat, there’s something to satisfy everyone’s entertainment needs.

Perhaps the ugliest race is the Democratic contest for attorney general, pitting a woman against a whiner: prosecutor Kathleen Kane and former congressman Patrick Murphy. Murphy certainly can’t run on his record (there isn’t one), so instead he has charged Kane with being a millionaire trucking executive. (Note: If you can figure out how being married to a trucking company owner would prevent a career prosecutor from being an effective AG, please let me know. Perhaps she would look the other way on the rampant truck-on-truck crime in Pennsylvania?)

Of particular concern to many is that Murphy, who as a congressman perfectly personified the deer-in-headlights legislator (remember the Hardball interview with Chris Matthews on the Iraq war?), is running for the state’s top law enforcement job despite never prosecuting a single criminal case in Pennsylvania.

Murphy will need all the help he can get to pull out a victory, and apparently that help has arrived. Sources tell me that elements of the Republican Party have been covertly (and even overtly) pulling out all the stops for the young doe. And for good reason: They see him as infinitely easier to beat in November than an articulate (and better-looking) female prosecutor.

Speaking of Republicans helping Democrats, for your reading pleasure I have a letter from Governor Tom Corbett pushing Steve Welch, the Obama-voting, Joe Sestak-supporting U.S. Senate candidate he personally endorsed (and strong-armed the Republican Party into endorsing). So in the spirit of accuracy, I’ve “corrected” the Governor’s letter to reflect the truth, though we will leave the bad sentence structure intact. My commentary in bold:

Dear Friend,

In less than two years we have turned the tide [by being just like Ed Rendell?], and are righting the wrongs of the liberal agenda here in Pennsylvania [yes, that same “liberal agenda” that, in fact, was passed by an overwhelmingly Republican state senate]. We brought a new way of thinking to Harrisburg after inheriting a recession and a $4.2 billion dollar budget deficit in 2011 [Sorry, Guv, but despite the constitutional requirement for a balanced budget, those deficits still exist because no one—Republican or Democrat—will address the issues that led to those deficits. Examples abound, such as the $400 million in I-80 tolls used to “balance” a prior budget—even though that interstate never became a toll road, and the money was never “repaid.”]. While we have witnessed others in the past attempt to solve our state’s problems by spending more of your hard-earned tax dollars, I have employed a fiscally conservative approach to our economic issues [Yes,by finishing Rendell’s spending legacy of bailing out the Philadelphia shipyard to build ships with no buyers, constructing a new stadium for the  [obviously poor] New York Yankees’ AAA baseball team, funding the multimillion dollar Arlen Specter library, spending Delaware River Port Authority funds [AKA taxpayer dollars] on projects having nothing to do with the bridges while tolls continue to increase … we’d love to continue, but column space is limited to 10,000 words].

Together with the General Assembly, we have put our state’s economy back on track [uhhh, the natural gas industry is leaving the state, in part because of no political leadership, and the unemployment rate has not measurably dropped], not by demonizing the private sector, but by lowering taxes [Really? The job-killing taxes haven’t been touched, such as the nation’s second-highest corporate tax and the 18 percent tax on every bottle of wine and booze to rebuild Johnstown from the flood—of 1936!], cutting government spending [let’s be honest—that’s only because the federal stimulus dollars dried up],balancing the budget on time and giving businesses the ability to create jobs and drive economic growth.

Unfortunately, we have a government in Washington, D.C. stuck in the same liberal trap that Pennsylvania was suffering in. We started the fight in 2010 by talking about real change and real reforms  [Very, very true. It was, and remains, all talk.] With your help and support, I was elected along with a Republican State Senate and House Majority, U.S. Senator Pat Toomey and 12 Republican congressmen to cut wasteful spending and promote economic growth. This year, we have to continue our efforts and send U.S. Senate candidate Steve Welch to join the fight! [The irony is just dripping here. Pennsylvania elects all those Republicans to stop the “liberal” Obama agenda—and Corbett is pushing an Obama-voter who was, until fairly recently, a Democrat. Go figure].

I endorsed Steve because he has the passion and ability to take our shared Pennsylvania values to Washington, D.C. and get our federal government’s reckless spending back under control. He is a businessman who has worked tirelessly to achieve the American dream, creating a successful living for himself and creating jobs for hundreds of others. In the private sector, Steve has helped young entrepreneurs achieve their own dreams of launching a successful small business [In keeping with the “dream” theme, who in their right mind could possibly dream that endorsing an Obama supporter would rally the Republican Party?]

Steve is running for the U.S. Senate because he believes in the same values you and I do! [Wait, whose values? Obama’s or Sestak’s? Or both? And do most in the GOP share those values? Admittedly, the Party’s pick for Prez is the architect of government healthcare, but still … ]Steve could no longer sit back and watch as President Obama and Senator Bob Casey continue to spend our way into oblivion and add more debt onto the backs of future generations [Damn! If only Welch didn’t vote for Obama, that line may have worked!!]. Steve wants to bring fiscal responsibility back to Washington, D.C. and help others achieve the American dream, as he has. [Unfortunately for Corbett and Welch, that’s not going to happen. There are no points for second  [or third] place. Sorry, Bob Casey: It doesn’t look like Christmas is coming early for you.]

DUI Suspect Allegedly Rammed Citizen’s Vehicle To Flee

George Jacoby, 23, of Springfield waived a hearing Thursday before Magisterial District Judge Dave Lang on the charges of DUI and resisting arrest. In exchange for the waiver the charges of disorderly conduct, reckless driving, and harassment were withdrawn. The charges stem from an incident 12:15 a.m., March 31, at I-476 and Collins Drive in Marple, Pa.

According to the affidavit, Marple Officer Andrew Ronsvalle responded to a report of a reckless driver and located three vehicles on the shoulder. The witness stated that he was following a red truck, operated by Jacoby, and pulled in front of Jacoby when he pulled onto the shoulder. When a second vehicle pulled behind Jacoby, Jacoby drove his truck into the first vehicle in an attempt to get away.

Jacoby had a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot glassy eyes, extremely slurred speech and failed field sobriety tests. When Ronsvalle attempted to handcuff Jacoby a struggle ensued.

Jacoby was transported to Springfield Hospital and he continued to struggle and curse and caused a disturbance in the hospital. He told police he needed to use the bathroom and when they removed the handcuffs Jacoby chest-bumped Ronsvalle and attempted to kick both Ronsvalle and Officer Pete Baylor. Jacoby refused to calm down and refused a blood test.

Jacoby was released and is scheduled for a May 17 arraignment in Common Pleas Court.

Daniel Antenucci, 23, of Springfield, waived a hearing on the charges of DUI and possession of a controlled substance. In exchange for the waiver the charge of racing on highways was withdrawn. The charges stem from an incident 1:58a.m., Jan. 28, at Lawrence and Sproul roads.

According to the affidavit Marple Officer Chris Chermak saw Antenucci operating a green sedan recklessly through the parking lot of 1991 S. Sproul Road. He followed the car and confronted Antenucci when he pulled into the parking lot of Wawa.

Antenucci had a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot glassy eyes, was unsteady on his feet and failed field sobriety tests. He was transported to Springfield Hospital for a blood test that revealed a blood alcohol content of .214 percent.

Four Ecstacy pills were confiscated from Antunucci’s glove box.

Colin Tipping, 29, of Upper Darby waived a hearing on the charges of DUI and simple assault stemming from an incident 10p.m., March 17, at West Chester Pike and Rittenhouse Road. In exchange for the waiver the charges of aggravated assault and a turn signal violation were withdrawn.

According to the affidavit, Marple Officer Ray Stiles was working a DUI Task Force when he saw a blue Lexus change lanes abruptly causing him to hit his brakes and swerve to avoid a collision. He was stopped at Rittenhouse Road. Tipping told police that he didn’t have his drivers’ license because he gave it to another officer. He was identified through his Passport. 

Tipping had an odor of alcohol, glassy eyes and failed field sobriety tests. As Stiles attempted to place Tipping in handcuffs he became irate and pulled away. Tipping cursed and spit at Stiles. When they arrived at the police station Tipping was more irate and refused to walk. He was taken to the ground until he calmed down.

Tipping refused a blood test and refused to sign the paperwork.

Tipping was released and is scheduled for a May 17 arraignment in Common Pleas Court.

Kevin Cunningham, 58, of Rutledge waived a hearing on the charges of DUI for an incident 5:14p.m., Feb. 10, at Lawrence and Sproul roads. In exchange for the waiver the charges of restrictions on alcoholic beverages and a turn signal violation were withdrawn.

According to the affidavit, Marple Officer Steve Benecke was monitoring traffic when he saw a silver vehicle turn left onto Sproul Road from the right lane of Lawrence Road. When he stopped the driver, identified as Cunningham, Cunningham threw an open can of beer out his car window.

Cunningham had an odor of alcohol and admitted to consuming two beers. His field sobriety tests showed signs of impairment/ Cunningham agreed to a blood test and was transported to Springfield Hospital.

Cunningham was released and is scheduled for a May 17 arraignment in Common Pleas Court.

Jenna Martin, 32, of Upper Darby, waived her hearing on the charges of retail theft for an incident 1:39p.m., April 14, at Walmart, 400 S. State Road. In exchange for the waiver the charge of receiving stolen property was withdrawn.

According to the affidavit, Marple Officer Pete Baylor responded to the store when Loss Prevention apprehended Ms. Martin for concealing merchandise valued at $138.18.

A computer check revealed Ms. Martin has two prior convictions for retail theft.

Ms. Martin was released and is scheduled for a May 17 arraignment in Common Pleas Court.

Ellen Crawford, 45, of Philadelphia was held in abstentia for a May 17 arraignment in Common Pleas Court on the charges of receiving stolen property, retail theft and possessing instruments of crime. The charges stem from an incident 5:18p.m., March 25, at Old Navy, 400 S. State Road.

According to the affidavit, Marple Officer Joe McGettigan responded to the store when Loss Prevention apprehended Ms. Crawford for concealing merchandise valued at $175. A pair of wire cutters used to remove sensor tags were confiscated from Ms. Crawford.

Newtown Police Warn Of New Internet Scams

The Newtown Police received a complaint on April 19  from a township resident who found out he is the victim of one of these scams, the fraudulent tax return – identity theft.

Romney To Appear In Delco

Mitt Romney is scheduled to appear at 12:30 this afternoon, April 23, at Mustang Expediting, a transportation company at 35 Stanley Drive, Bridgewater Business Park, Aston, PA 19014, which is actually in Chester Township. He is expedited to be joined by Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida who is said to be on his short list as a running mate. 

Mustang Expediting president Stephanie Fleetman is a consistant contributor to the GOP.

Can’t say I feel the thrill but this Pennsylvania campaign stop a day before the primary maybe shows that the former Massachusetts governor has a nagging concern about an open convention. Guess one can’t blame him for not wanting to take chances.

Will OWS Crash Tea Party?

The General Wayne Tea Party is warning that it has heard reports that members of Occupation Wall Street are going to crash Tea Party meetings.

Beats sleeping in the street I guess.

I say let them in, provided they bathe first or at least use some deodorant.

So Where Are The Political Signs?

Fran Coppock points out that the primary election is Tuesday and that that there is nary a lawn sign to be seen.

Well, regarding the presidential race Gingrich and Paul don’t have much money or support — except for maybe me — and Romney is already selling tickets to his inauguration so he probably doesn’t feel the need to spend anything on lawn signs yet.
But that certainly does not explain the hotly contest GOP senate battle. My guess is that the local Republican parties — unlike the the state one — do not want an Obama voter/Sestak donor to represent them. In other words, they are ABW (anybody but Welch)  which is good news for Sam Rohrer, Tom Smith, Dave Christian and Marc Scaringi none of whom are Steve Welch.
My vote is going to Rohrer.
Incumbent Senator Bob Casey Jr., by the way, does have a primary opponent in Joe Vodvarka, a businessman from Allegheny County. Hopefully, he is running a brillant guerilla campaign that shocks the pants off the do-nothing scion
