William Penn didn’t read the documents he signed. An evil fellow Quaker named Philip Ford was his business manager. He had him sign a document that transferred ownership of Pennsylvania to himself. He then started charging Penn rent, which he didn’t pay. When Ford died, his wife threw Penn in debtors prison. The powers that be thought that that was too low, freed him and gave him the colony back.
