He also used the old hidden ball trick to tag Beals Becker out at second.  He also tricked Hans Lobert into starting for third after stealing second then tagging him out.  But that's not the amazing thing about the day. The amazing thing is the Phillies actually won, 3-1.

He picked Bowie after the legendary Western tough-guy and knife-inventor Jim Bowie. David Bowie would make his fortune wearing a lot of make-up. Jim Bowie would not have approved.

The day after June 6, 1944  on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, Private Joe Barrett of the 474th AAA shot down an airplane.  Unfortunately, it was an American P-51.  Fortunately, the pilot survived, parachuting out.William Lawrence Sr Omnbit 6-6-15

Unfortunately, the pilot had a date that night and was wearing his dress uniform and carrying a bottle of whiskey.

Fortunately, the managed to get him off the beach and back to England.

Whether he made his date is unknown.

Barrett would go on to raise a family in Havertown, Pa. and become  a newsman with the Philadelphia Bulletin.

This was more variety than the training meals of Olympic gold medal sprinter Usain Bolt which was 1,000 Chicken McNuggets a day. And fries.
