Don Adams of the always brilliant Independence Hall Tea Party Association proposed a “GasCott” during a recent appearance on WHPT’s Dom Giordano show.

He’s encouraging Pennsylvanians to fill their tanks in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware in response to the gas tax hike imposed last November by our Republican-led state government that will give our state the highest gas tax in the nation by 2018.

Don, by the time the full tax takes effect encouragement will not be needed to fill up in other states.

To  make our anger known in the short-term, we propose a CorbettCott. Leave Gov. Tom Corbett’s name unchecked during the May 20 primary election while voting for the down-ticket.  If enough Republicans do this, maybe a cleansing gale could be started to blow away the corrupt (insert an appropriate noun) who run the state party.

SB76 Hearing Tomorrow

The Senate Finance Committee has scheduled a public hearing 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 30,  in Hearing Room 1 of the North Office Building in the state Capitol to consider the Property Tax Independence Act (Senate Bill 76), reports state Rep. Jim Cox (R-129).

A  rally is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on the front steps of the Capitol to show support for the bill.

Taxing Stupidity Illustrated

New York State taxes the sale of cigarettes at $4.35 per pack.

It is estimated that 57 percent of those in New York State smoke cigs smuggled in — even from Pennsylvania believe it or not. This means that New York gets zero revenue from most of its cigarette smokers. If the state were to halve the tax it would likely get more revenue than it does at its current rate.

This also means that well over half of New York smokers are willing to break the law rather than obey one they find pointless and oppressive.

Just something for all the nanny-state, government-educated can’t-think-for-themselves “progressives”  to consider.

New York City adds $1.50 per pack on top of it. One strongly suspects that nobody in the city is buying their smokes with a state stamp.

With April 15 approaching, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue’s website offers free online tax assistance and filing services for qualified individuals, says State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129)

One can also click on www.pafreefile.com, which offers individuals with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less the opportunity to use tax preparation software from reputable vendors and file both their state and federal tax returns at no cost.

For individuals whose gross adjusted income exceeds $58,000, the department offers the option of using a free online fillable form for their state returns only. This option does not offer the benefit of tax software assistance, but it is a good choice for those who are comfortable completing their tax forms without help. It can be accessed through the same web address.

GOP Destroying Tax Vote Looms

SB 1, aka “The Transportation Bill” aka “The Income Destroyer Bill” aka “The Republican Suicide Bill” may be voted on by the Pennsylvania State House this week, reports Teri Adams of the Independence Hall Tea Party Association.

The bill calls for a 30 cent per gallon tax hike on gasoline, among other things. It was approved by the Senate in June but tabled when those crazy Tea Party types in the House put up a fuss. Well, it looks like it’s now time for round two and the establishment “Hey, It’s Not My Money” Republicans seem to think they can make enough of a deal with the “IT’S MY MONEY, GIMME, GIMME, GIMME” Democrats to overcome the Tea Partyers.

Gov. Tom “I Need No Stinkin’ Second Term” Corbet has promised to sign it.

“Just so you know, Governor Tom Corbett and a majority of the PA Senate  refuse to call a gas tax increase of roughly $.30 a gallon a ‘tax.’  Just substitute the euphemism ‘revenue’ for the word ‘tax’ and allow them to take you to the cleaners,” said Ms. Adams.

She notes that the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry also supports the bill as parts of the state’s infrastructure is indesperate need of repair.

“But State Representative Stephen Barrar (R-160) informs us that the $2.5 billion Transportation Bill is laden with pork for bike trails and other parks and recreation spending,” said said. “Representative Barrar suggests that while bridge repair is necessary, the additional spending is not.”

Also, the citizen cannot afford a 30 cent per gallon gas tax hike.

Ms. Adams and her association suggest Governor Corbett and the PA Assembly cut spending elsewhere in the budget or pass the Liquor Privatization Bill and use the fees generated from the sale of liquor licenses to cover the cost of repairing the bridges.

“Why is it that our Governor and State Senators always look to our wallets as the solution to their funding problems.  Do they not understand that our wallets are empty?” She said. “Do our elected officials not know how to prioritize budgetary matters?”

She asks that citizens call House Majority Leader Mike Turzai at 717-772-9943 and tell him to table SB1–the Gas Tax Bill!

“Then call your State Representative and tell him/her to VOTE NO on SB1 if and when it comes up for a vote,” she said.

Corporate Tax Rate And What They Really Pay — The corporate income tax rate is 35 percent in the United States and is considered the highest in the world. The Government Accountability Office, however, has found that U.S. corporations with at least $10 million in assets paid an average effective federal tax rate of just 12.6 percent.

Who’d thunk it?

The reason of course is the loopholes and gimmicks that can be found by those able to afford high-powered accounts and lawyers.

Now some will point out that only people pay taxes not corporations, and that is basically true. Still, those businesses that  try to do the right thing and wish to follow the law should not be at a disadvantage to those that don’t.

House GOP Saves Pa. From 28 Cent Per Gal Tax Hike

House State Government Committee Majority Chairman Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) issued the following statement  regarding final passage of Pennsylvania’s 2013-14 state budget.

“I voted for this year’s $28.4 billion state budget because in the
end it is a victory for limited government and limited government
spending.  For the third consecutive year, total spending growth falls
below the TABOR allowable growth rate of 2.54 percent by $59 million.
Best of all, fiscally-conservative House Republicans were able to hold the line and, ultimately, defeat Governor Corbett’s nearly $2 billion annual gas tax-driven transportation funding plan and a backdoor attempt by the state Senate to expand Medicaid under ObamaCare.

“No matter how you look at it, Medicaid expansion is a blatant attack on working taxpayers and a blatant violation of our Constitutional rights.  Pennsylvania needs to stand together with the states that have already rejected ObamaCare in full to protect our citizens’ freedoms and pockets from this accelerated spending nightmare.

“Rather than increasing taxes and fees to generate transportation
revenue out of the pockets of hard-working taxpayers, we should look to other areas ripe for cuts.   If we cut the Department of Public Welfare budget by 10 percent, more than $1 billion in revenue could be generated for necessary infrastructure improvements and repairs.  Using the money from the sale of the state liquor stores could also generate $1 billion.  Tax and fee increases are the wrong answer for funding roads and bridges.  I will continue my fight to protect taxpayers.”

House To Vote On Transportation Fee Hikes

House To Vote On Transportation Fee Hikes — The  House Transportation Committee completed a series of public hearings on Senate Bill 1, a multi-year, comprehensive transportation funding plan, reports state Rep. Jim Cox (R-129). The committee received testimony from various stakeholders and industry representatives, including Pennsylvania Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale and representatives from public transportation systems, construction and engineering interests, agriculture, trucking, rail freight and others.

Senate Bill 1 aims to raise an additional $2.5 billion a year for transportation funding, with an additional $11 billion overall over five years, by proposing to:

–Remove the cap on the Oil Company Franchise Tax, which is charged at the wholesale level, over a period of five years.

–Reduce the State Liquid Fuels Tax over a period of four years.

— Make vehicle registrations valid for two years instead of one and increasing the net cost by $32.

— Make driver’s licenses valid for six years instead of four and increasing the net cost by $6.25.

The House Transportation Committee expects to vote on the bill this week.

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest transportation infrastructure in the country, Cox said. The governor’s Transportation Funding Advisory Commission has identified the need for an additional $3.5 billion annually to support maintenance and repair of the state’s roads and bridges, as well as public transportation systems.

You know Jim, ending the prevailing wage requirements might just cut the cost of those infrastructure improvements to the point where we don’t need these burdensome fee hikes.

Just sayin’.

State Rep.Daryl Metcalfe, one of the good guys, has just reported that the Pennsylvania Senate — which is controlled by Republicans if you are not aware —   is considering a transportation funding proposal that will increase the financial burden being carried by Pennsylvania’s citizens by $2.5 billion through tax and fee increases.

“The Governor is proposing to increase our financial burden by $1.5 billion,” he noted. “Government collects enough money from us already, reprioritizing expenditures is the answer to our transportation funding problem. I oppose the tax and fee increases being proposed. If you agree, then like and share this post. Contact your state legislators and the Governor to say no more tax and fee hikes!”

Stop Internet Sales Tax — The Independence Hall Tea Party Association is asking all to call the congressman to stop the  Internet Sales Tax bill, known as the ‘Marketplace
Fairness Act,’

The bill passed the US Senate in lopsided vote 69-27 vote but can be stopped in the US House.

“Please continue to call the Capitol Switchboard at 202.224.3121 and ask to be connected to your Congressman/woman.  Tell your Representative to oppose the Internet Sales Tax bill,” says Association President Teri Adams. “Then, use the same number to call Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor.  Tell them not to move the bill forward.”

She also suggest a  call be placed to House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) as that committee can deal a lethal blow to the tax bill.
