The Turks don’t call Greece, Greece. They call it Yunanistan. It comes from the Sanskrit yavana which comes from Ionia which was an ancient land in what is now Turkey that was ruled by Greeks.

Of course, Greece doesn’t call itself Greece either. The official name of the country is the Hellenic Republic.

Those who call Greece, Greece get the word from the Romans who called the land Graecia.

  1. Yes, Ionia was on the Aegean coast, across the Aegean from mainland Greece.

It was the center of a flowering in the natural sciences around 400 BC, where we saw the beginnings of what we would today call the scientific method.

Unfortunately, it was also a slave society, so some of the discoveries, like steam power, were treated as parlor tricks for amusement, rather than technological advancements.

It’s interesting to think about what might have been, if we had had the discoveries of the 18th and 19th centuries, two thousand years earlier.
