Cotton Bowl QB Set Unbreakable Record

Cotton Bowl QB Set Unbreakable Record

By Joe Guzzardi

Sports’ fans love to compile lists of accomplishments that are unlikely to be equaled. Here’s a sampling. On March 2, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain, then playing for the Philadelphia Warriors, scored 100 points against the New York Knicks. In 1946, the Cincinnati Reds’ Johnny Vander Meer tossed back-to-back no-hitters against the Boston Bees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 2022, pitchers completed only .01 percentage of the games they started, let alone tossing 18 consecutive hitless innings within four days. Speaking of no-hitters, Nolan Ryan’s total of seven over his 27-year career is safe for the same reason Vander Meer’s is—pitchers don’t finish their starts.

But an extensive Internet review of impressive sports accomplishments all overlooked one outstanding performance. And since football fans are reveling in the non-stop televised bowl season that began on Dec. 16, and ends on Jan. 9 when the National Championship Game will be played, 42 games total, today’s a good time to turn back the clock to the 1946 Cotton Bowl. In the match up between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Missouri Tigers, Longhorns’ quarterback Bobby Layne accounted for every single point scored in his team’s 40-27 win. A You Tube video of Layne’s Cotton Bowl action is here. Don’t expect anything remotely comparable to happen again.

Layne was also an outstanding Longhorns’ hurler who posted a 39-7 record that included two no-hitters, and he drew offers from the New York Giants, the Boston Red Sox, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Choosing not to endure the long grind up from Class D to the big leagues, Layne opted for the NFL.

That Jan. 1 in Dallas 1946 marked the beginning of Layne’s legendary college and professional career which spanned 18 years from 1944 to 1962, and produced a four-time All-Southwest Conference pick, six-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections, a spot on the NFL’s 1950s All Decade team, and 1967 induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. In 1995, Sports Illustrated named Layne the “toughest quarterback who ever lived” and in 1999, the Sporting News placed him #52 on its list of 100 greatest players. Layne’s gridiron success came despite his notorious partying which meant that he was often hung over at kick off, and his teammates recalled, imbibing a few quick ones at half-time.

In Detroit, Layne is remembered ingloriously for the successful curse he put on his former team, the Lions, after they traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers. During the early 1950s, Layne and the Lions dominated the NFL. With Layne under center, the Lions won three championships. Layne partied on, but his antics exhausted the Lions’ front office. In 1958, the defending champion Lions traded Layne to the Pittsburgh Steelers. On his way out the door, a disappointed and angry Layne predicted that the Lions wouldn’t win again for 50 years; Layne’s famous hex worked. On the 50th anniversary of Layne’s curse, the Lions went 0-16. Along with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans, the Lions are one of three teams that have never appeared in a Super Bowl.

When Layne retired in 1963, he owned the NFL records for passing attempts 3,700, completions, 1,814, touchdowns, 196, and yards passing, 26,768. He left as one of the last to play without a face mask, and was credited with creating the two-minute drill. Doak Walker, Layne’s Hall of Fame running back said, “Layne never lost a game…time just ran out on him.”

Heavy drinking and wild living took years off Layne’s life. Layne partied hard and died young. In 1986, liver failure took Layne at age 59. “My only request,” he once said, “is that I draw my last dollar and my last breath at precisely the same instant.”

Changing Default Search Engine Can Save America

Changing Default Search Engine Can Save America — Most of the problems facing those of who love America are either complex and hard, or simple and hard.

Here’s one that’s simple and easy to fix, and that would lead to surprisingly consequential results.

Google is used by 86.49 percent of Americans for searching the web according to a November survey.

Dr. Robert Epstein, who had been one of the world’s most prominent psychologist until he pointed out that Google’s manipulation of search results pushed millions to vote D, notes that Google’s manipulation of search results pushes millions to vote D.

If we can get 10 or 20 or 50 million Americans to make something other than Google their default for searches, 10 or 20 or 50 million Americans would be better informed. Also conservative websites — and their content — would become much more visible, and those who want to bring forth a New World Order of drag queens will lose millions of votes.

How to switch?

BusinessInsider.com gives good directions. Note that the options in the default search engine dropdown menu for the major browsers are Google, Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Ecosia.

There are other search engines but remember that we are making this easy for grandma.

We’ve been using Ecosia, which is used by .09 percent of us but Bing (about 8 percent) and the Duck (2.35 percent) are also infinitely superior to Google.

Forget Yahoo (2.95 percent) as it is no better than Google.

Changing Default Search Engine Is Simple And Easy Way To Save America
Search engine hits for BillLawrenceOnline.com for Dec. 28, 2022. If DuckDuckGo was as big as Google, it would have given us 643 hits. The results would be even more profound with bigger sites like Breitbart and Gateway Pundit.

Can Frank Agovino Turn Swarthmore Red?

Can Frank Agovino Turn Swarthmore Red?

By Bob Small

Can Frank Agovino Turn Swarthmore Red? — Frank Agovino has been elected at the new Delco GOP chairman replacing the retired Tom McGarrigle and promising a host of changes.

“I want to get the party on better footing, and that means having a 49-municipality strategy that actively invites more people into the process from across the county,”  he said.

He also intends to “establish a committee on mail in voting” and wants to “improve our performance amongst voters who now prefer to vote early and remotely”.

“We need to do a better job of serving as a watchdog and holding the current l(democratic) leadership accountable,” he said. It is also our duty to effectively articulate an alternative vision.”

Can Frank Agovino Turn Swarthmore Red?
Frank Agovino

This was an election where only one county Republican candidate State Rep Craig Williams (D-160) won.  Incumbent Chris Quinn (168th) was an incumbent who was upset.

Agovino was the GOP candidate for the 26th District senate seat in November losing to incumbent Timothy Kearney

Agovino’s New Avenue Foundation started the Media Bean Company which is still around, albeit in Newtown  Square, still making great breakfasts.  He has been involved with a number of boards, including the Delaware County Intermediate Unit, the Manufacturers Alliance of Delaware and Chester County, and the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, etc.

He received a BS in Marketing from St. Joe’s and an MS in Organizational Leadership from Cabrini.  He lives in Springfield with his wife and daughter,.

One borough in Delco where Republicans have not been on the ballot recently, is Swarthmore.  Maybe Frank Agovino can revitalize the Swarthmore GOP which, sadly does not have an electronic presence.

This is an article I wrote a while ago.  Nothing has changed.

Swarthmore Was Once Republican – BillLawrenceOnline

Hopefully, Frank Agovino will provide some needed changes.

Narrow D Win In Bucks County

Narrow D Win In Bucks County

By Bob Small

F. Todd Polinchock, a two term GOP incumbent lost in the November election.  One of his many issues was tougher gun legislation and other anti-crime measures.  He also wanted greater energy production.

He is a pro life supporter.

He is a Realtor.

The Democrat winner, Brian Munroe had 16,123 votes to Polinchock’s 15,608 or 50.8 percent. A victory but hardly a mandate.

Narrow D Win In Bucks County
Brian Munroe

PA house district 144 consists of 5 areas in Bucks County. Since it’s creation in 1969, all the State House representatives had been Republican.

Munroe has been an emergency medical technician and a Radnor Police officer. He was also a volunteer firefighter.  He is a US Navy Veteran.

Among his signature positions are pro-choice, Green Jobs, increasing healthcare coverage, and a iving wage. He has also come out for free community college. For other positions, see his website.

Reviewing the five PA House incumbents who lost, four of them were GOP.  Some of this was due to redistricting and some may have been the statewide candidates at the top of the ticket.

Or maybe something else.

Like in many political setbacks, there are lessons to be learned by more astute minds than mine.

George Santos Should Stay In Congress

George Santos Should Stay In Congress — The usual suspects are demanding that GOP Rep-elect George Santos resign because he lied like a dog about being Jewish during his campaign.

George Santos Should Stay In Congress

George Santos flipped New York’s 3rd Congressional district red in November when he defeated Robert Zimmerman.

Stick to your guns, George. If a guy can call himself a girl and walk into a ladies room, you can call yourself a Jew and walk into Congress.

Hey, it’s not like you were sleeping with a Chinese spy or hanging out with a guy who rapes and murders young black men.
